As one of the UK’s “Big 6”, SSE shares around 70% of the UK energy market with its peers British Gas, Scottish Power, N Power, E.On and EDF. But how do SSE tariffs stack up against other suppliers, both large and small? Here we’ll take a comprehensive look at SSE’s tariffs to help you find the right one for your needs.
Last updated: February 2021

With 5 million customers across the UK and one of the highest customer service ratings of the “Big 6” energy suppliers, many of us rely on SSE for our gas and electricity. With roots that can be traced back to the late 1940s, SSE has long been one of Britain’s foremost green energy suppliers, and a major force in UK hydropower. SSE generates electricity as well as supplying it. Today, SSE offers 100% green electricity to both domestic and commercial customers. But do SSE tariffs give UK energy consumers the value for money that they deserve?

SSE Energy Tariffs and Prices

SSE have a goodly range of tariffs that cover a wide range of consumer needs, including tariffs for customers with prepayment meters, as well as customers with Economy 7 and even Economy 10 meters.

SSE Tariffs

What’s more, their partnership with OVO gives them advantageous rates on other products such as fibre broadband as well as heating and boiler cover. There are even tariffs specifically for electric vehicle owners.

Let’s take a look in greater detail.

Please be aware that rates described are averaged out across the country. As such, your rates may vary slightly, depending on where in the UK you live. Rates described all include VAT at 5%.

This 12 month fixed rate tariff is bundled with a 12 month fibre broadband contract with a commendably fast 35Mbps average download speed. When customers use SSE / OVO’s broadband, they get a 5% discount on the energy they use when they take out broadband at £23 per month.

Rates for this tariff are as follows:

SSE Energy tariffs compared: Which is the cheapest tariff?

In the table below, we compare the various tariffs offered by SSE and their estimated monthly and annual cost. To calculate this, we use the UK average annual consumption of 12,500 kWh for gas and 3,100kWh for electricity.

Tariff Name Estimated Monthly Cost Estimated Annual Cost
SSE Fix and Fibre v2 Bundle £108.12 £1,297.38
SSE Protect & Fix v2 Bundle £94.75 £1,137.03
SSE Standard Tariff £89.71 £1,076.48
SSE Fix & Drive v2 £89.71 £1,076.48
SSE 1 Year Fix v2 Tariff £89.71 £1,076.48
SSE 2 Year Fix v4 Tariff £91.50 £1,076.48
SSE Fix & Control v2 Tariff £96.62 £1,159.48
SSE “Evergreen” Prepay Tariff £90.89 £1,090.63

As we can see, using SSE’s estimates, all of the above tariffs actually exceed Ofgem’s Price Cap of £1,042 per year. The 12 month fixed rate tariff is almost identical in real terms to the variable standard tariff, although the SSE Protect & Fix v2 Bundle may offer better value for money as it offers fairly comprehensive heating cover for around £5 extra per month.

Please note that the top two are bundles that include other services, which is why costs are higher.

SSE Business Tariffs

Like most larger energy suppliers, SSE offer business energy tariffs to companies of all shapes and sizes and can cope with the energy loads of enterprise-level companies as well as small businesses.

Rates depend on the size of your business, your location, your usage, and your peak energy load hours. You can visit their Business Energy Page to receive a quote.

SSE Energy price changes in 2020

In September 2020, SSE that its variable rate tariffs would be reduced by 7% in line with Ofgem’s newly revised energy price cap. The price change was expected to come into effect in October 2020. However, at the time of writing when the quotes were retrieved, it seems that they do not yet reflect the new price cap.
