Offering 100 percent renewable electricity and known as one for the first established green energy suppliers, SSE might seem like the best option for you. After all, they have a lot to offer. But, how do SSE tariffs stack up against other suppliers, both large and small? Here we’ll take a comprehensive look at SSE’s tariffs to help you find the right one for your needs.
Last updated: June 2022
With 5 million customers across the UK and one of the highest customer service ratings of the “Big 6” energy suppliers, many of us rely on SSE for our gas and Electricity. With roots that can be traced back to the late 1940s, SSE has long been one of Britain’s foremost green energy suppliers, and a major force in UK hydropower. SSE generates Electricity as well as supplying it. Today, SSE offers 100% green Electricity to both domestic and commercial customers. But do SSE tariffs give UK energy consumers the value for money that they deserve?
As you may have heard on the news, the UK energy market is currently under an immense amount of stress as a result of a global gas shortage driving up costs and putting several energy suppliers out of business. To learn more about this and stay updated on a daily basis you can read our page on the UK energy crisis.

Next steps for SSE customers
SSE Energy became part of the OVO family in January 2020. Below we clarify the most important questions if you were an SSE customer. However, not much will change for you, as mainly the name SSE operates with is affected by the move. Followed by that you’ll find the SSE/OVO tariffs.
Has SSE been taken over?
SSE was one of the UK’s “Big 6” energy suppliers. The supplier still operates under the same brand name, but is now a subsidiary of OVO Energy, which took over its customers in January 2020. Operating under the same name seems logical, as the reputation of SSE was mainly a good one. Since the take over, customers have been gradually switched to OVO’s tariffs, while ensuring that SSE’s customers do not experience any noticeable changes following the switch. However, while SSE will continue to offer tariffs to its remaining customers, OVO plans to switch customers to its own tariffs until SSE can be dissolved as a provider altogether.
I’m a SSE customer: Will my energy supply be interrupted?
SSE customers have nothing to worry about. This move did not result in any interruption to energy supply, nor did it affect energy prices paid or affect gas or electricity meters.
Is SSE more expensive?
SSE is also affected by rising energy prices. Unlike fixed tariffs, the price of variable tariffs can rise or fall, and they are usually the most expensive tariffs offered. Due to the increase in wholesale energy prices at the end of 2021, suppliers had to pay much more for energy than before.
SSE tariffs 2022
Since SSE has been taken over by OVO Energy, the tariffs of OVO Energy are presented below. As described above, this change was made as silent as possible for the existing SSE customers. Thus, the variety of tariff offers has been preserved. Not to be forgotten, however, are the effects of the energy crisis. SSE also states on their website that they are currently not accepting customers due to the energy crisis.
