Green Energy UK: Are they the right supplier for you?

Notice

Green Energy UK, or GEUK, is one of the most environmentally conscious energy suppliers in the UK. Since being founded in 2001, their goal has been to pioneer green and sustainable energy in the UK and to win over clients with quality customer service. Now, Green Energy UK is one of the few suppliers in their market to offer 100% renewable electricity and the only energy supplier to offer 100% green gas, meaning that rather than fossil fuels their gas is sourced from animal and plant waste. This also means that Green Energy UK has no need to provide a carbon offset on their gas because its 100% green!
Last update: November 2022

Green Energy UK currently operates in England, Wales and Scotland, selling 100% Ofgem certified green and renewable energy. They are a strong contender year after year for being one of the most environmentally friendly energy suppliers in the UK. At the moment they provide their customers with either dual fuel energy or solo electricity, but they do not offer solo gas tariffs to any of their customers.

Based out of Ware, Hertfordshire since 2001, after two decades GEUK has accumulated around 1,000,000 customers and continues to pioneer new ways to provide sustainable energy and quality services to their customers. GEUK may be the right energy supplier for you, but before you make that decision to switch, we suggest continue reading to find out more about them and their services.

We Consider Green Energy UK A Moderately Stable Supplier
As you may have heard on the news, the UK energy market is currently under an immense amount of stress putting several energy suppliers out of business. We have designated Green Energy UK as a moderate risk supplier right now, which means that they could face trouble if the UK energy crisis worsens much further. How sustainable is Green Energy UK?

Green Energy UK, as mentioned earlier, has been considered one of the most environmentally friendly energy suppliers in the UK for around two decades at this point. With sustainability becoming a very marketable attribute among suppliers in the UK energy sector, how can we be sure that Green Energy UK is as environmentally friendly as they claim to be?

Sustainability Certifications

Green Energy UK is the recipient of several awards and has even been certified by Ofgem, the governing body of the UK energy industry, to provide 100% renewable energy. Additional certifications that GEUK possesses are a REGO (Renewable Energy Guarantees Origin) for their electricity supplied to customers, and an RGGO (Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin) for all of their gas supplied to customers. These additional certificates allow customers to track the energy that they are using back to its source if they choose to do so and identify the source of renewable energy.

However, as green energy demand grows so must its production, which has the potential to encroach on wildlife and even destroy habitats, for instance, wind farms being developed in marine and in the country can have major impacts on local ecosystems that are often overlooked. Acknowledging this, Green Energy UK produced a new tariff called EKO Energy, which has been independently certified to only source power that has been generated in locations that protect bird & marine migrations, as well as wildlife habitats.

What is GEUK’s Energy Fuel Mix?

All of the energy that GEUK supplies to its customers is 100% renewable and clean, making them completely green. Their energy fuel mix breaks down as following:

  • Coal – 0%
  • Natural Gas – 0%
  • Nuclear – 0%
  • Renewables – 100%
  • Other – 0%

All of their electricity is sourced through wind, solar, biomass, and hydropower, while all of their gas is supplied through anaerobic digestion, aka animal waste.

In addition to the above information, GEUK also published their net environmental impact:

  • Carbon Dioxide Emissions – 0.00g per kWh
  • High Level Radioactive Waste – 0.00000g per kWh

Does Green Energy UK have good reviews?

Yes! Overall, Green Energy UK has solid reviews online from passionate supporters of their vision, mission and goals. Currently, there are just around 1,000 reviews for GEUK on Trustpilot and their average score is near perfect.

GEUK’s 982 total customer reviews break down as following:

  • 708 (72%) – Excellent
  • 150 (15%) – Great
  • 47 (5%) – Average
  • 28 (3%) – Poor
  • 49 (5%) – Bad

Is GEUK any good?

Despite the energy market in the UK being hyper-competitive in the early 2000s before any meaningful regulation was put in place, Green Energy UK, or GEUK, emerged as a strong contender in the industry. Their vision for sustainable energy was something that was clearly resonating with many consumers, which has helped GEUK to remain competitive even today despite facing off with competitors like the UK’s “Big 6” energy UK.

Even though we will take a deeper look at the customer reviews of GEUK later on in this article, the general consensus is quite positive. On Trustpilot, GUK sits at 4.5/5 stars based on nearly 1,000 reviews, putting them in the excellent category above a number of notable competitors.

A majority of the positive reviews made about Green Energy UK revolved around the same topics: their commitment towards sustainability, quality customer service, and their quick reactions to customer complaints.

The general consensus is that Green Energy UK holds true on their first goals from 2001, to provide the greenest energy possible and excellent customer service.

Is GEUK bad?

The few bad reviews that Green Energy UK does have were clearly written by customers that were sincerely agitated. Their reasons for frustration ranged quite a bit, but overall it seemed like the most common issue was incorrect billing/quotes. Several customers alleged that they were receiving a higher bill each month than they were quoted beforehand, claiming that GEUK was overcharging and taking advantage of them.

While overall the majority of the reviews are positive, there are still energy consumers that have had very negative experiences with this provider, which may be something to carefully consider before you switch suppliers.
