Avro Energy tariffs in 2020 are often among the cheapest on the market. Indeed, Avro Energy were rated “Best Value For Money” last year’s energy awards. But energy prices are always in a state of flux. We’ll look at the latest data to see how Avro Energy’s prices measure up.
The coronavirus pandemic is likely to affect all of our personal finances. However, the UK lockdown will not affect the services we provide. Our team of experts are working hard to ensure that you make savings on your energy bill by switching suppliers. Read more about your energy supply during COVID-19 here.
We, as a nation, have a bad habit. No, not over-indulging on our Sunday roasts or drinking too much tea. Our bad habit is that we’re overspending on our energy. In fact, studies show that between us we’re spending around £800 million too much for the energy we use. As such, Ofgem recommends that we change suppliers and tariffs every 12-18 months. And while around 70% of energy consumers choose to stick with the “Big 6” suppliers, their smaller counterparts can almost certainly get you a better deal on your energy. Let’s take a look at Avro Energy tariffs in 2020, and see how they compare with your current supplier.
Avro Energy Tariffs and Prices
Avro pride themselves on their commitment to “Energy Made Simpler”. As such, they have a fairly modest range of tariffs that they supply to around 40,000 customers across the UK. Although most customers with standard credit meters and Economy 7 meters are likely to find a tariff that fits their needs.
Let’s take a look in greater detail.
Please be aware that rates described are averaged out across the country. As such, your rates may vary slightly, depending on where in the UK you live. Rates described all include VAT at 5%.
Let’s take a closer look…
Avro Energy standard tariff
Avro Energy’s standard tariff is the variable rate tariff that’s available to new and existing customers alike who don’t want to be tied into a lengthy fixed contract. This is known as the Simple Energy tariff.
While, like most variable rate tariffs, this standard tariff has no exit fee, it’s also their most expensive tariff. To put it into context, approximately 60% of other tariffs available are cheaper.
Their Simple Energy tariff rates are as follows:
|Electricity unit rate||14.963p per kWh|
|Gas unit rate||3.061p per kWh|
|Electricity standing charge||21p per day|
|Gas standing charge||21p per day|
The average family uses approximately 12,000 kWh of gas and 2,900kWh of electricity per year. We can extrapolate this to create an average annual cost of:
- £367.32 in gas unit charges
- £433.93 in electricity unit charges
- 153.30 in standing charges.
This combines to an estimated annual spend of £954.55 annual costs.
While this is slightly below Ofgem’s Energy Price Cap, which as of October 2020 is £1,042 per year for both fuels, it remains Avro’s least competitive tariff.
Avro fixed rate tariffs
Avro has recently overhauled its fixed rate tariffs, with a new range of tariffs representing some of the brand’s best deals. Their fixed deals are as follows:
Simple and SuperPrime
Avro’s Simple and SuperPrime tariff became available in October 2020.
it is a 12 month fixed tariff that provides very competitive rates and good value for money. Best of all, unlike most fixed energy tariff, it does not have any associated exit fees. So if you decide that this is not the best deal for you, you’re free to switch to another tariff or supplier at any time without reprisals.
You can find out more information on the rates for this tariff below:
|Electricity unit rate||14.700p per kWh|
|Electricity standing charge||15.750p per day|
|Gas unit rate||2.483p per kWh|
|Gas standing charge||15.750p per day|
|Estimated Monthly Cost||£71.13|
|Estimated Annual Cost||£853.51|
Simple and SuperGlow
Another 12 month fixed tariff, the Simple and Superglow tariff has slightly lower per unit rates. However, there is an exit fee of £30 per fuel with this tariff.
Details are as follows:
|Electricity unit rate||13.939p per kWh|
|Electricity standing charge||15.750p per day|
|Gas unit rate||2.263p per kWh|
|Gas standing charge||15.750p per day|
Simple and Superfixed
Finally, the Simple and Superfixed tariff will usually represent the best value for money for most households. Unit rates for electricity and standing charges are the best that the brand has to offer. What’s more, you won’t even be charged any early exit fees if you wish to take your business elsewhere.

|Electricity unit rate||12.836p per kWh|
|Electricity standing charge||14.700p per day|
|Gas unit rate||2.284p per kWh|
|Gas standing charge||14.700p per day|
Avro Energy no standing charge tariff
If you’re looking for an energy supply for a holiday home or other property that is not occupied all year round, Avro Energy’s no standing charge tariff will likely appeal to you. Here you only pay the unit rates for your fuels. And while this means that this tariffs’ unit rates are not the cheapest, it’s interesting to note that the electricity rate still compares favourably to Avro Energy’s standard variable rate.
Unit rates per kWh for this tariff are:
- 13.781p for electricity.
- 3.255p for gas.
Avro Energy prepayment tariffs
Unfortunately, Avro Energy does not currently supply electricity to customers with prepayment meters. Nor has it announced any intentions to do so.
Avro Energy Economy 7 tariff
Curiously, although Avro Energy claim to provide tariffs for Economy 7 customers, requesting a quote with an Economy 7 meter does not yield separate day and night rates.
Avro Energy business tariffs
As a smaller energy supplier, Avro Energy does not currently offer business tariffs, preferring instead to focus its efforts squarely on the domestic energy market. Time will tell whether or not Avro Energy choose to get into the business energy market as the company grows.
Avro Energy tariffs compared: Which is the cheapest tariff?
If we compare all of Avro Energy’s tariffs side-by side, it becomes clear that the Simple and Superfixed tariff offers the best overall value for money, even though it has a fractionally higher gas unit rate than the Simple and Superglow tariff.
You can see the different tariffs along with their estimated monthly and annual costs below. These costs employ the UK average energy use of 12,000 kWh of gas and 2,900 kWh of electricity per year.
|Tariff Name||Estimated Monthly Cost||Estimated Annual Cost|
|Simple and SuperPrime||£71.13||£853.51|
|Simple and SuperGlow||£65.90||£790.77|
|Simple and SuperFixed||£62.80||£753.63|
|No Standing Charge Energy||£65.85||£790.25|
Avro Energy price changes in 2020
Thankfully, Avro Energy’s price changes have fluctuated relatively little in 2020. While many larger suppliers had to significantly reduce their rates in October 2020 after the Energy Price Cap dropped to £1,042 (the lowest since its inception). Avro Energy’s tariffs have remained significantly below this threshold. Even its most expensive tariff is slightly below this newly reduced price cap.
The only real fluctuation is that the Simple and Superglow tariff saw a penny increase in the electricity unit rate, and a reduction of .021 of a penny in gas unit rate. As a result, the tariff rose by roughly £39 between July and August.
