Ecotricity Tariffs & Prices

The Switch Plan team understands the importance of matching energy consumers to the right tariff.
Below we’ll compare Ecotricity’s various tariffs. All of which offer total flexibility, with no fixed-term commitments or early exit fees. However, your rates are locked in for at least 6 months. All tariffs include 100% renewable electricity with completely carbon-neutral biomethane gas from plant waste. Combined gas and electricity tariffs also include a dual fuel discount of £15 per year.
Unit rates listed are based on UK national averages. Yours may be higher or lower, depending on your location. Estimated annual and monthly costs are based on UK average usage of 2,900.00 kWh of electricity and 12,000.00 kWh of gas per year.

Ecotricity Bills: What is the average bill?

Most UK households have single-rate standard credit meters. If we assume that they pay the UK median average energy rates and have average usage of 2,900 kWh of electricity and 12,000 kWh of gas, we can use this to work out the average bill with Ecotricity.
With their standard tariff, this will be approximately £124 per month, or £1,488 per year. Admittedly, this is higher than the average bill. But many believe that an energy plan that is 100% renewable and highly ethical is worth paying a little extra for.

Has Ecotricity raised its prices in 2021?

While energy costs are locked in for 6 months from the time of signing up, all of their tariffs are nonetheless variable. As such, their rates have risen as of April 2021 when wholesale energy costs rose to pre-pandemic levels and the Ofgem Energy Price Cap was raised from £1,042 to £1,138 per year.

Ecotricity Green Energy & Smart Export Guarantee

There are lots of green energy suppliers on the market today. But for those who want the greenest of the green, Ecotricity is an excellent choice. Here we’ll take a look at what makes Ecotricity so green.

Ecotricity Fuel Mix

Ecotricity’s energy fuel mix is 100% renewable. If we break down where their energy comes from, we can see that:

  • 55.82% comes from offshore wind
  • 41.6% comes from onshore wind
  • 2.07% comes from hydropower
  • 0.51% comes from solar

We can expect to see solar power play a larger role in Ecotricity’s energy fuel mix in future after their Smart Export Tariff is launched (more on that shortly).

Green Electricity

As we can see, Ecotricity’s electricity is 100% green, from renewable sources with no fossil fuels or carbon emissions whatsoever.

Green Gas

1% of Ecotricity’s gas is generated in their green gas mills. This is where plant and farm waste are broken down to generate 100% renewable biomethane. None of this comes from animals, which is why Ecotricity is the only supplier that is approved by The Vegan Society.
The remaining gas is natural gas that is carbon offset by investing in carbon reduction schemes all over the world. Ecotricity is working hard to combat fracking and reduce its reliance on finite natural gas with more production of green biomethane.

Ecotricity Smart Export Guarantee scheme rates

If you have solar panels and generate your own green energy, you can get paid by your energy supplier for whatever unused energy you feed back into the grid. This was once done under Feed in Tariffs which have been replaced by the Smart Export Guarantee as of 2019.
According to Ecotricity’s website, they are not yet set up to offer payments under the Smart Export Guarantee. However, they promise that their Smart Export Tariff is coming soon:
“Once the SET is ready we’ll be offering a generous payment for every kilowatt hour of energy you export to the grid.”

Ecotricity business tariffs

If you run your own business and want a green energy scheme that’s tailored to your needs, you’ll be happy to learn that Ecotricity also provides business energy tariffs to enterprises of all shapes and sizes. Whether you’re a microbusiness, an SME or a large enterprise-level company, they provide energy plans that are tailored to your needs. They also boast energy plans specifically suited to the needs of property developers.
Commercial energy plans are made to measure, and as such are not listed on Ecotricity’s website. Your rates will vary depending on your location(s), the size of your company, how much energy you use, and your peak energy load hours.
