What are the top boiler cover providers of 2021?

When winter approaches you know your home’s central heating will be one of your most important belongings. And for your home to stay warm, your central heating apparatus needs to be in tip-top shape. Because your boiler is the heart of your home’s central heating, this means that your boiler needs a little TLC all year round. Boiler servicing, maintenance and repairs can all ensure that your boiler functions optimally and keeps your home warm. The right boiler cover providers can take the cost out of keeping your boiler in peak condition.

In this article we’ll take a close look at boiler cover and demystify the different types of policies, before helping decide which of the top 15 boiler cover providers of 2020 is the right fit for your home.

What does boiler cover include?

Not only are there a wealth of boiler cover providers out there, there are also a great number of different policies. Every policy is different and you can never afford to make assumptions as to what is included in your boiler cover. Always check the details of a policy before you commit to choosing your boiler cover.

Broadly speaking, however, boiler cover providers offer three bands of cover:

Basic Boiler Cover

These boiler cover policies cover the cost of repairing your boiler in the event of a fault or breakdown. Many mistakenly purchase this kind of cover believing that it will cover every aspect of their central heating. However, basic boiler cover policies can only be applied to the boiler unit itself, as well as the controls. In most policies, the heat exchanger is also covered.

Basic boiler cover does not, however, cover pipework, radiators or other parts of your home’s central heating infrastructure.

Basic boiler cover policies include the cost of repairing your boiler as well as free or discounted servicing. In some cases, if a boiler cannot be repaired it may be replaced free of charge, as long as you have held the policy for 6 months or more, and your boiler is less than 7 years old.

Many boiler cover providers have the facilities for 24/7 call-outs. However, this is not a feature in all policies. Most boiler cover providers ensure a repair within 24 hours.

Boiler and Central Heating Cover

Boiler and central heating cover has the same features as a basic boiler cover policy, as well as covering other parts of your home’s heating apparatus like radiators, flue and pumps.

Please note that Boiler and Central Heating Cover will not include general maintenance tasks such as removing sludge from radiators. It will also not cover any work carried out by other engineers.

Boiler Central Heating and Wiring Cover

Basic boiler cover, and even boiler and central heating cover options, will usually not cover wiring and electrical issues. There are, however, separate boiler, central heating and wiring cover policies that include repairs to wiring and electrics. Some will also include cover for plumbing and drains. While monthly premiums will be higher, they can save you a lot of money on the cost of repairs to wiring caused by things like power cuts and other electrical issues that are not caused by you.

Always check your policy, as there is great variation between what different cover providers will and will not include in these policies. For instance, most will not cover external wiring and general maintenance issues, and different policies may or may not cover damage caused by pests like mice or rats.

Is it worth getting my boiler serviced?

Yes, absolutely. An optimally efficient boiler is important in keeping your home warm while also consuming less energy. Annual servicing helps to ensure that your boiler functions at peak efficiency while also greatly reducing the risk of falt or failure in later years. As well as risk of breakdown, a faulty boiler can also be a source of deadly carbon monoxide leaks. Given that boiler servicing is either included in or heavily offset by your boiler cover policy, it’s absolutely worth servicing your boiler every year.

Regular servicing will:

  • Reduce the risk of failure or breakdown.
  • Prolong the lifespan of your boiler.
  • Ensure energy-efficiency.
  • Ensure that your manufacturer’s warranty remains valid.

Is boiler servicing covered in my boiler cover?

This depends on the policy. Most cover policies have at least one free service, and you are usually expected to schedule this within the first 3 months of your plan. In most cases, you are expected to schedule the service yourself. Don’t make the mistake of assuming that your plan includes servicing. Some plans include servicing year-on-year, while others only include one service. Some plans offer discounted servicing rather than adding it free of charge.

Always check the exact terms of your plan.

When do I need boiler cover?

The truth is that you need your boiler cover all year round. Especially in the colder months when your home’s heating infrastructure is working harder on your behalf. Your boiled cover can ensure that whenever something goes awry with your boiler unit, you can get a timely repair or even a replacement unit. What’s more, it also either includes the cost of boiler servicing or at least offsets it. So your home benefits from your boiler cover all year, every year. Even if you don’t need to make a claim.

How much does boiler cover cost?

That depends on your boiler cover provider and the kind of policy you have. On average, however, UK households pay £288 per year according to a 2020 independent survey. This includes the cost of annual servicing. That amounts to £24 per month or roughly 80p a day.

That’s a pretty small price to pay for year-round peace of mind. However, there are many who pay significantly less than this national average.

You can reduce the cost of your boiler cover by:

  • Checking that you’re only paying for the kind of cover you need.
  • Pay upfront annually if you are able. It usually costs a little more to pay monthly.
  • Switch boiler cover providers regularly. Renewing the same policy year-on-year invariably costs more. Customers who switch can save anywhere between £72 and £228 annually.

Home emergency cover vs. best boiler cover

There are some who mistakenly assume that they don’t need boiler cover because they believe that their home insurance will cover the cost of boiler failures. Likewise, there are also some who are paying over the odds for unnecessary cover because they have both boiler cover and an insurance policy that contains home emergency cover.

Not every home insurance policy can cover the cost of repairing or replacing a faulty boiler. However, if your home insurance policy includes home emergency cover, you may benefit from some of the same protections as a boiler cover policy.

Most home emergency cover providers will include the following in their policies:

  • Repairs and replacements for boilers that are 7 years old or less.
  • Blocked sinks, drains or toilets.
  • Leaking pipes.
  • Broken windows, doors and locks.
  • Urgent roof repairs.
  • Damage caused by a pest infestation.
  • Alternative accommodation if your home is unsafe.

As we can see, there is some overlap between a good boiler cover policy and home emergency cover. Some households may benefit from both, while others may only need one or the other.

We’ll compare them directly here:

Home Emergency Cover Best Boiler Cover
Boiler repairs for newer boilers. Boiler repairs and servicing. May include older boilers aged 7-10 years.
Covers pipes, drains and electrical wiring. Covers pipes, drains and electrical wiring.
May cover damage caused by pests. May cover damage caused by pests.

What is the best boiler cover?: How to choose the best boiler cover for your needs

The best boiler cover provider and plan for you will depend very much on your home and your circumstances.

We’ll shortly take a look at 20 boiler cover plans and why they are worthy of consideration. While looking through them, you should think about whether each plan’s cover and cost are a good match with your home’s needs.

Some key questions to ask yourself include:

  • How old is my boiler?
  • What is the age / condition of my household pipes?
  • How stable are the electrics that support my boiler?
  • How well insulated is my home from pests like rats and mice?
  • How much can I afford to spend on my policy every month / year?
  • Does my home insurance policy have home emergency cover? If so, do I need both?

The best boiler cover for you depends entirely on your household’s needs and the age or type of boiler you have. If your boiler and associated wiring are fairly new, you may wish to choose a reasonably priced basic boiler cover just to offset the cost of servicing, and protect you in the unlikely event of a boiler failure.

If, on the other hand, you live in an older property, you should consider choosing a boiler and central heating cover to insulate you from the risk of paying for costly repairs to your pipework. Likewise, if you want the peace of mind that comes from knowing that everything is covered, you may want to pay the few extra pounds per month to ensure that your wiring is covered, too.

Please note that some boiler cover providers may not cover older boilers. If your boiler is over 12-15 years old, you may find it harder to find a policy. This is because boilers of this age are drawing close to the end of their life cycle and are, at the very least, much less efficient than their newer counterparts. They represent a greater risk for the boiler cover providers and as such they may simply regard your boiler as too risky to cover. Even if you are able to find cover, you may find that your boiler is excluded from being replaced if it dies completely.

Top 15 Best Boiler Cover Plans

There are many different boiler cover plans on the market. Here we’ll look at 20 of the UK’s most popular. For each we’ll provide a brief overview, an estimate of the plan’s annual cost and some pros and cons.

However, even if you commit to one of the plans listed below, we still recommend changing your policy at least once a year. As with your household energy, switching policies regularly helps to keep the market competitive, driving down prices for everyone. FAQ

Are boiler covers worth getting?

Absolutely. For a fairly negligible monthly cost (especially if your boiler is less than 7 years old), you can enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing that your boiler is in peak condition and that it will keep your home warm when you need it most.

What is the excess on boiler cover?

That depends on the specific plan you choose. However, as we can see from the plans above, the excess is usually between £60 and £100 per claim. Be aware that some will issue a call-out charge rather than an excess.

Does my insurance cover a replacement boiler?

That depends on your policy. Usually, if your home insurance includes home emergency cover you will be able to get your boiler repaired or even replaced, However, this cover does not include any kind of servicing or maintenance. Never assume that a replacement boiler will be covered by your home insurance.

Is there a difference between boiler cover and boiler insurance?

Not really. Boiler cover is a form of insurance. However, this is subtly different to a maintenance plan, although they are functionally very similar. A maintenance plan, for instance, may have a call-out charge instead of an insurance excess. Whatever plan you choose, and whatever name it’s known by, it’s essential to choose the right cover for your household’s needs.
